How does a coach help clients ?

Coaching requires a good communication between coach and client with the purpose to identify opportunities and actions with the purpose of helping the client to achieve his vision or main goals.

Although there are many coaching process as coaches styles are; my coaching model (IDEAS model) is one that helps the coach with a process that start by building a safe
and supportive environment, creating trust. Will include a discovery phase in which self reflection and awareness are an important part of it. this phase also may include some type of diagnosis or behaviors assessment. This is where strengths and opportunities are identified.

A second phase is the evaluating phase that may include the creation of awareness by reflecting on findings from phase one, as well as, reviewing new options.

A third phase will focus on aspirations, this is defining the client’s vision, exploring and evaluating gaps, recalibration and identify and setting new goals.

The fourth phase is a key process in coaching: Creating Successful Actions. Part of this phase is to identify actions, creating an implementation plan, reviewing progress to sustain and adjust actions.

According to ICA. . ..

Coaching Vs Mentoring

They differ on the bases of the help provided. A mentor in general is an experienced person in the matter that the “client” is getting support on. The mentor not only takes the client into finding the answers but also provide “expert advice” to the client.

Commitment vs. Trying: Are we committed ?

Can we say, I am 100% committed to complete my  training or my certification on …?

People may say: I lost 8 months on it and I am not sure when I will be done with it, as I have other responsibilities in life, but despite those responsibilities I am committed to finish one of these days.

I think on this case, the person has the passion for the training, understand that is important for him/her; but how can you say you are committed if you do not understand what are you committing to?

As I believe, commit, comes from putting something together (com-together + mittere to put). It means that you need to understand or know that parts to keep everything together.

On this case, the parts are the challenges and risks that you are willing to take and be able to complete your commitment, therefore you can not commit to something if you do know what are you committing to (the components of it).

In Coaching, the help that the coach brings into the process is critical on this aspect. It helps the client in understanding his real desires, his goals and the commitment to achieve it.

The coach helps also by getting the client into action to reach his or her goal.

Power Tools: Truth vs. Fraud and The four agreements

Reflecting in our reading of Truth vs. Fraud and the reference to Don Miguel Ruiz book, The Four agreements.

At this instance, Truth is about being authentic with ourselves. I believe, this is about being fully committed to our values, specially the value of Integrity. We cannot be seen as honest and living a truthful life, if we cannot be faithful and committed with ourselves. This is what Don Miguel offer with the 4 agreements:

1.- Be Impeccable with your word; Speak only the truth and say what you mean. do not use your word against yourself or other (gossips).

2.- Don‘t take anything personally; what other people do and say is what they are and how they feel; It is their projection is not about us. But how we feel and the way we see things is our internal projection. Being unaffected by the actions of others we will avoid unnecessary suffering.

3. Don‘t make assumptions; be clear and avoid judging others when we can clarify other’s words, action and intentions and this way avoid misunderstanding and unneeded life complexity or drama.  When we make assumptions we are creating potential problems. With clear communications all relationship will improve.

4. Always do your best; We are not always in the same state of mind or physical condition as we change but our intent would be to do the best on every occasion, this way we will feel in peace with ourselves as we take every action as something we enjoy and not waiting for any reward; they will come but we are not attached to any expectation.

This is about being authentic with ourselves. This way, we feel and act always truthfully.

Reflection on perception of truth

Think about your perception of truth. What are the behaviors that you see of someone living by the truth?

I see self-confidence; see someone in perfect harmony (by being truthful to him /herself).

This is about living without of dear. Is easier to say then do.

But this is about, knowing ourselves better, accepting that we can fail once in a while, but learning form those experiences and recognize that reality or truth, we will a bit more be free of self imposed frustrations.

I found the concepts on the book Leadership and Self-Deception, very interesting which is similar to my thoughts above but even more dramatic due to the fact that it goes beyond not recognizing who we are but worse, pretending being straightforward with ourselves but living in a fraud and we create, what they call, self-betrayal and with that we change everything around us by a distorted reality (or in the box)

Power Tools: Reacting Vs. Responding

Responding is reflective, is being present, we are aware of our own feelings and thoughts and those of our interlocutor, therefore we choose our response.

Reacting is a non-thoughtful behavior, conditioning response. The conditioned response is the learned response to the previously neutral stimulus.

Although, both behaviors; Responding and Reacting, could bring a positive or negative response.

Routine -> Conditioning -> Reacting

View/Perceiving-> Thinking-> Thoughts -> Chosen behavior- > Responding

I would like to summarized similarly as shared in the class today

Reacting is ME.  My instinctive and learned “answer” or behavior.

My defensive “feedback” to the situation or person.

Responding is YOU and ME.

MY VIEW to your input thinking in US and not in ME alone.

This is a more thoughtful answer to the situation or to the person.

Power Tools: Trust Vs Doubt

How do I define self-trust?

Is the belief that we can depend or rely in our own capabilities, knowledge, skills and strengths and be able to get along on our daily lives or to achieve our personal objectives

In what areas of your life does self-trust show up the most?

It shows in many ways, such as career challenges, however, more importantly is in my daily commitments. Being able to keep promises to myself on what I said I will do every day, small steps, to achieve my goals ( Career, Personal, etc)

What role does trust play in developing relationships?

It is point of paramount impact on relationships. Not a true relationship would develop with the lack of trust if any would be something superficial and not a true or significant relationship.

This is also true with building self-esteem with ourselves.

It was interesting to …

Coaching: Ethics and Legalities

How do you determine what is ethical?

By thinking about what is in accordance to the common standards of the society and my own values and what I perceive as  ethical for me or in other words what it I perceived as ethical and right.

in the case of coaching, by using ICF and ICA recommendations and what is included in their ethical code and ethical recommendations; as well as the ICF and ICA’s  guide lines for coach’s responsibilities or coach standards such:

1. Discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve

2. Encourage client self-discovery and exploration

3. Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies

4. Hold the client as responsible and accountable

5. Support the client in their journey

As I stick to the ICF ethical standard and coach responsibilities and by . . . .

Powerful Questions

One of the most powerful ideas that I felt attracted into coaching, was about two specific aspects or tools that I had experienced when working with excellent Coaches in the past; they are:

Active Listening: Ability to focus completely on what the client is saying and is not saying, to understand the meaning of what is said, the emotions that can give me a hint on the underlying beliefs.

Powerful Questioning: Ability to ask questions that reveal the information needed for a maximum benefit to the coaching relationship and the client and to understand or help in brining the client’s underlying beliefs which will support the change that customer is looking for and will facilitate any “reframing “ needed.

As I explored our coaching  information on Powerful Questions, it was so helpful to me as it describes not only the types of questions we should be asking (open and closed questions), probing questions, the Socratic method that will support finding the underlying beliefs and to find facts that are known and some that are unknown even to our clients. This questioning process will help to find together those fact and later the Client’s underlying beliefs.

This questioning process is similar as . . . .

Reflecting on Acknowledgements

One aspect taht is very important in coaching, is to acknowledge our clients in their efforts, actions and successes.

How often do we have people to cheer us on in life?

How often does someone let us know that they see?

The focus is on frequency, in how often we acknowledge others or how others do the same to us.

In a way this questions are asked do to the feeling, that we do not provide acknowledgements as often as we should, or we do not get enough acknowledgement ourselves.

I started to reflect on why this is the case. The first idea that came . . . .

Reflection on underlying beliefs in coaching

Reflection on underlying beliefs

Why bother to discern Underlying Beliefs?

To gain awareness about how we behave and why; to use this to understand past patterns of behavior that disempowered or
empowered us.

With this new insight, what would be an empowering action to take?

An action outside the limiting (old) beliefs

Why is knowledge of an Underlying Beliefs helpful in making constructive choices?

As we gain understanding we can have a better perspective that will help us take action (on unwanted or limiting beliefs) outside these beliefs that will bring new and better behaviors, this way creating different results in our lives.

What is the role of Underlying Beliefs in the coaching process? . . . .
